What Is the File Extension Chr?
- The CHR extension may mean that the file is a font file for various programming IDEs released by the company Borland. Font files store detailed information for how to draw individual letters in text.
- If the file is a font file from Borland, then the first eight characters of the file, when opened in a text editor such as Notepad, should be "PK...BGI."
- The CHR extension could also mean that the file contains information about a character in a game that uses BioWare's Infinity Engine. Many popular RPGs (role-playing games) produced by BioWare, including Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, use this engine.
- If the file is a character exported from a game using the Infinity Engine, then the first eight characters of the file, when viewed with Notepad, will read "CHR.V1.0."
- The file could also be a modification plug-in for an open source strategy game named Liero. A program called the Liero Graphics Editor outputs these files, which allow players to change the graphics used by the game. Unfortunately, these files do not have a signature to identify them.
