Identification

• Lighting is often put in and around pools. Safety issues arise with faulty underwater lighting; old electrical wiring; the use of pumps, power washers and vacuums that are not grounded; and electrical appliances or extension cords falling into the water.
  
  

Effects

• Water conducts electricity, and when the current is exposed, the entire body of water becomes dangerous. The American Red Cross warns swimmers that electrical hazards around water can cause multiple deaths or injuries. This happens when a swimmer becomes incapacitated by a stray current and someone else jumps in to help, resulting in multiple electrocutions or serious shocks.
  
  

History

• The U.S. Product Safety Commission reported nearly 60 deaths and 50 serious shocks involving electrical hazards around swimming pools between 1990 and 2003.
  
  

Considerations

• Electrical hazards around pools present an even greater risk if the lighting, circuits and nearby receptacles are not protected by Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters (GFCIs). These are the most effective safety device to prevent electrocution.
  
  

Warning

• The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends having an emergency plan posted near a pool with actions outlined to follow in the event of an electrocution. Pool lighting installation should be completed and regularly checked by a professional electrician.
