How to Stain the Concrete in a Horse Barn
- 1). Sweep the entire barn floor after relocating the horses to remove straw, feces and food.
- 2). Rent a pressure washer to clean stubborn grime and oil buildup on the floor so the stain will adhere to the concrete better and last longer.
- 3). Measure the barn's floor space and calculate the surface area.
- 4). Compare the masonry stains available at your hardware store and consult package directions to determine how much stain you need in order to cover your horse barn floor. If you are concerned about fumes, purchase waterborne-acrylic masonry stain rather than solvent-based, but remember that solvent-based will last longer before needing reapplication.
- 5). Apply the stain with a large paint roller. Stain each horse stall individually before staining the center floor between stalls. Work stain into sharp corners with a sponge mop if the roller cannot reach.
- 6). Leave all doors and windows open to accelerate drying time and vent fumes out of the barn. Consult stain package instructions for drying times. In most cases, masonry stain is ready for foot, and hoof, traffic in 72 to 96 hours.
- 7). Reapply stain as needed when it becomes faded, worn or discolored.
