How to Plant Onion Sets for Table Onions
- 1). Prepare the soil for the onions by digging or tilling the ground after the ground has thawed. Work up the garden soil at least 10 inches deep.
- 2). Add a 2- to 4-inch layer of compost over the ground. Mix soil and compost together.
- 3). Level the surface with a rake.
- 4). Separate your onions by size into two piles. The largest onion sets are used for table onions. The smaller ones will grow into cooking onions.
- 5). Mark your row by placing two sticks at each end of the garden and connect them with a piece of string or twine. This will ensure a straight, even row.
- 6). Stick a stick or your finger into the ground to make the holes. Make each hole approximately 2 to 3 inches deep, with 1.5 inches between each hole.
- 7). Plant one onion per hole, placing them root side down. The root side is usually the flatter side.
- 8). Cover the onions with soil and firm the soil lightly with your hand.
- 9). Water the onions thoroughly and to keep the ground moist. Do not over-water or the onions could rot.
