Online degrees are a hot item in today's world of information technology. A recent Sloan Consortium study confirmed this fact by showing that the demand for online courses had increased by more than 70 percent in just one year. One popular field of study is hospitality management, a discipline that usually includes both hotel and restaurant management. Several schools offer online degrees in this field. - The Art Institute of Pittsburgh offers an online Bachelor of Science in hotel and restaurant management. Students at the institute have the assurance of receiving a quality online degree; the school is regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. The degree is designed to prepare students for entry-level careers in catering, management and other diverse careers in the field. The bachelor's degree requires 180 credits for graduation. Students take courses in a variety of fields. Of these, 60 credits are general education requirements and 12 hours are electives; the remainder are required courses in hotel and restaurant management. Some of these include food and beverage operations management, hospitality industry financing, strategic planning and marketing and introduction to foods, cooking and preparation techniques.

Penn State University (PSU) is one of the most recognizable names in higher education. The university now offers various online programs through its "World Campus". These programs are fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The degree program requires 64 to 66 credit hours. Of these, 21 are general education requirements and 44 are required courses for the major. The school also offers a non-credit certificate program for professionals already working in the industry who may need to fulfill continuing education requirements. The degree program requires 120 credit hours. Of these, 50 hours are required in the HRIM field, while 13-15 of these hours are business courses in accounting, finance and marketing, among others.
