Definition:

Although erythrophobia can mean fear of the color red in general, in a medical sense it refers to a chronic and severe fear of blushing. People with this phobia realize that their fears are irrational but feel powerless to control them. They may develop secondary fears about being the center of attention or being embarrassed in front of others. Most people with erythrophobia try to suppress their blushing but doing so makes them blush even more.

Some people with erythrophobia may also suffer with social anxiety disorder (SAD); a severe, chronic and impairing fear of social and/or performance situations. When erythrophobia is accompanied by a diagnosis of SAD, treatment in the form of anxiety medication or therapy may be recommended.
