    • 1). Go to your doctor for all your scheduled check-up appointments. Several times a year, your doctor will check the function of your pacemaker and the battery. The battery may need replacement every five to 15 years, according to the American College of Cardiology.

    • 2). Ask your doctor how many times your heart needs to beat each minute. Ask him for a recommended schedule of monitoring your heartbeat.

    • 3). Check your heartbeat as often as your doctor recommends, or whenever you feel that your heart may be beating too quickly or too slowly. Use a stethoscope, or place two fingertips on the inside of your other wrist.

    • 4). Count the number of pulses you feel for 60 seconds. If you have trouble counting while watching a clock, ask someone to time you.

    • 5). Call your doctor if the number of pulses is outside of the normal range.
