Definition:

An apolipoprotein is a protein that is attached to the surface of a lipid, or cholesterol, molecule. Together, these parts make up a lipoprotein. Examples of lipoproteins are VLDL, HDL and LDL.

Apolipoproteins are responsible for helping to transport cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. Additionally, an apolipoprotein is responsible for directing the lipoprotein to its correct destination in the body.

There are different types of apolipoproteins found on different types of cholesterol.

A mutation in an apolipoprotein may cause high cholesterol.
