Horseboxes which are available on the market today vary greatly with specifications available to suit your every need.  Primarily the box you choose needs to meet the need of the horse in which you intend to travel.  Larger boxes allow bigger horses more room to balance whilst they are in transit, yet could equally travel just as comfortably alone in a smaller box.  The smallest box available is 3.5 tonne and can be driven on a standard driving licence.  This would allow one or two horses, depending on their size or three ponies to travel comfortably.  Over a 7.5 tonne weight horsebox requires a special licence and would carry four large horses with ease, depending on the size of the living space.  Over and above that are the HGV Lorries which are often used to travel horses long distances, their sheer size allow several large animals to travel with plenty of room.  High spec horseboxes for sale have evolved and become some of the most luxurious vehicles on the road.  With CCTV, hydraulics, power showers, air-conditioning for the horses, LCD TVs, toilets and even cars have been built into the horseboxes to make your experience of travelling some what more stylish.  However budget depending often these magnificently built horseboxes are not affordable for people who compete once in a while.

Even basic horseboxes are fantastic to manoeuvre your horse or pony safely and standard living still provides a more practical space for jockeys and grooms.  From experience the Luton above the cabs are invaluable as the space can be used to store equipment or often is used as a sleeping area.  A walk through from the cab into the living is also particularly useful when travelling in case a horse becomes untied so that the groom can see to the horses without pulling over.

When looking for a potential horsebox for sale one of the most important aspects is the condition of the floor.  Don't be fooled by new rubber matting as underneath the floor could be rotten, so always thoroughly check the flooring.  Some floors are wooden and will therefore need attention at some point especially if the horsebox has not been kept clean and could be sodden in urine which over time will perish and could potentially become lethal.

Good springs on the ramp are also imperative as it is very handy if one person can easily lift the ramp rather than it always being a team effort!  Ventilation in the box is also important as some horses become very hot when travelling and a well ventilated area would help the horse travel more comfortably.  Also the direction in which the partitions face vary in many boxes with either the horses travelling vertically, horizontally or even a mixture of the two if the lorry also has a side ramp.  Horseboxes can vary enormously and it is wise to choose a box that best suits the horse in which you intend to travel as some horses can be fussy and prefer travelling in certain ways.   However choosing a suitable horsebox to meet you and your horses' needs is down to personal preference and if you know your horse well you will know how best to travel them.
