Adopting Kittens: Tonkinese Appearance and Personality

105 28
Tonkinese cats are a recent cross between the Siamese and Burmese cat breeds. Some claim that Tonkinese-like cats have existed since at least the early 1800s.

When the breed was first established in Canada, the name was spelled "Tonkanese," which referred to the island in the musical South Pacific where half-breeds suffered no discrimination.

This is the same cat breed depicted in The Cat-Book Poems of Siam during the Ayudha period (1358-1767) and imported to England in the early 1800s as chocolate Siamese.

In the United States, both Tonkinese and Burmese can trace their beginnings back to Wong Mau, a small walnut-covered cat imported to California by Dr. Joseph Thompson in 1930.
