    Materials for the Bag

    • First you'll need to pick a fabric with a design in it that you like. This can be a simple color or design that you can sew something into later. Once you have chosen your fabric pattern you'll need 1/3 yard of this fabric, a crib size of cotton batting, cotton thread and marking pencils. You may also use other materials like brown rayon thread for sewing or 1/8 yard of buckskin shaded fabric for an optional potato applique.

    Cutting the Fabric

    • Begin cutting everything exactly. The fabric for the bag itself will be 11 by 23 inches. Another piece of fabric will need to be cut for the lining of the potato bag measuring 10 by 22 inches, as it will be sewn into the slightly larger bag fabric as lining. The cotton batting will need to be cut to match the size of the bag's fabric at 11 by 23 inches. If you decide to use the optional buckskin colored fabric , it should be cut at about the dimensions of a potato at 4 by 2 inches.

    Making the Bag

    • Place the cotton batting on the wrong side of the bag piece. Then channel the quilt 1 inch apart lengthwise on the piece of bag fabric. Now you will trim the quilted piece to measure 10 inches by 22 inches and then stitch the bag to the lining around all sides, leaving 5 inches open along one edge. Trim the corners and press lightly. Now fold the top edge down 2 inches onto the bag's back. Fold the front of the bag so the seamed edge matches the top fold. Stitch each side and press out a crease at the bottom.

    Boxed Bottom of the Bag

    • To make the bag have a boxed bottom, bring the side seam and the bottom crease line together. You can pin it to secure it. Then measure 1 inch along the seam line from an end point of the seam, and mark this point. Draw a line perpendicular to the seam line and then mark that point. Stitch on that line, through all the thicknesses. Repeat for the opposite corner. Turn right side out, turning the flap to outside. The bag can hold up to four potatoes in the microwave.
