January• January 6: The Elector of Trier disperses the émigrés.
• January 25: Ultimatum to Austria.
February
• February 9: Decree announcing that émigrés property is to be seized.
March
• March 1: Holy Roman Emperor Francis II succeeds to the throne; he is more belligerent and against the revolution than his father.
• March 25: Ultimatum to the Holy Roman Empire.
April
• April 20: War declared against Austria.
• April 25: Guillotine first used; it becomes a symbol of the revolution.
• April 29: French General Dillon killed by troops after minor defeats with Austria.
May
• May 27: Further decree against refractories: they can be deported if denounced by 20 citizens.
June
• June 13: Prussia declares war.
• June 18: Lafayette calls for the Jacobin's to be suppressed.
• June 20: Journee of June 20 as the Tuileries are invaded by Sansculottes, The King resists calls to drop his vetoes.
July
• July 1: Petition of the 20,000 against the June 20 Journee.
• July 2: Creation of a camp of 20,000 fédérés near Paris.
• July 11: The Legislative Assembly declares 'la patrie en danger', the Country in Danger, and takes emergency powers.
• July 25: Paris sections enter a permanent session. Brunswick manifesto issued by the anti-revolutionary forces; it threatens Paris.
• July 30: Fédérés from Marseille reach Paris.
August
• August 3: The Paris sections call for the overthrow of the monarchy.
• August 9: Paris Commune created to campaign for overthrow of king.
• August 10: Journee of August 10: The Tuileries is stormed and the monarchy overthrown. The Legislative Assembly votes for the creation of a National Convention to create a new constitution.
• August 17: The Extraordinary tribunal established to try counter revolutionaries.
• August 19: Lafayette defects. Prussian forces cross into France.
• August 27: Elections to the National Convention begin.
September
• September 2: Fall of Verdun, the last stronghold between the enemy and Paris.
• September 2 - 6: September Massacres; 1,000 prisoners murdered.
• September 20: Battle of Valmy, French victory; last meeting of the Legislative Assembly/first meeting of the National Convention.
• September 22: France proclaimed a republic.
October
• October 2: Committee of General Security created.
November
• November 13: Discussions over fate of king commence.
• November 19: Decree of fraternity made, offers help to oppressed foreign people.
• November 20: Secret letters by the king discovered in the armoire de fer.
• November 27: Savoy annexed.
December
• December 11: Louis XVI's trial begins.
• December 15: Decree on treatment of occupied territories.
• December 16: Threatening the republic becomes a capital offence.
