Argeiphontes Basics

Argeiphontes is an epithet usually of Hermes, but also of Apollo. Although it is usually assumed argeiphontes means Argus-slayer -- as in the mythological event when Hermes killed Argus while he was entrusted by Hera with watching the heifer-Io -- this meaning is not unanimously accepted. Other possibilities are that argeiphontes means dog-slayer or snake-slayer or brightly shining.
