How to Raise the pH in a Vinyl Pool
- 1). Test the pool water with the test kit. Reach down at least 18 inches into the water with the test strip. Hold the test strip up to the test kit chart to see if the pH is low, high or neutral. If the pH level is lower than 7.2, you will need to add a pH increaser or soda ash to increase the pH level.
- 2). Mix the correct amount of soda ash with water if the manufacturer's instructions suggest diluting the granules or use without diluting if suggested. If the reading is 7.1, add 1/2 pound of a pH increaser or 1/4 pound of soda ash. For each reading under 7.1, add 1/2 pound more of a pH increaser or 1/4 pound more of soda ash.
Example: If the reading is 7.1=1/2 pound pH increaser or 1/4 pound soda ash, 7.0=1 pound of a pH increaser or 1/2 pound soda ash, or 6.9=1 1/2 pounds of a pH increaser or 3/4 pound soda ash. - 3). Bend down over the water. Pour the pH increaser or soda ash mixture in front of the return jets (make sure to sprinkle enough at each jet) in the pool if you have an in-ground pool. If you have an above-ground pool, sprinkle the mixture around the wall of the pool as you walk around the pool from the outside.
- 4). Retest the pH the next day and adjust if needed.
