Drinking With Dwarves in the Hobbit House in Manila (A Dubious Tribute to JRR Tolkien)

103 29
While the manner in which
we choose to spend our leisure time
may often be considered a matter of
personal choice
when choosing friends there may
be few places that provide such a wide array
of options

Granted, fraternizing with dwarves
may not be everyone's cup of tea
but in the Hobbit House there are also goblins,
elves, fairies, wizards, warriors and wolves
And each of them can be found imbibing
in their own favorite dark brown ale
So if you are lucky enough to have brought
your precious church key
it is likely that the doors will swing wide open
But do not misunderstand me
This is not a simple act of wanton debauchery
Rather it is a spiritual concern
Perhaps sanctuary is the proper word
And while this may either refer to a facility,
building, place, dwelling or abode
or an elevated state of mind
in this particular case,
I would say that the house meets
both definitions of the word
Yet it has nothing to do
with recovering your family fortune
or flying about without any trace of visibility
It is merely a matter of meeting friends
But as they say there is always something special
about a Hobbit Hole
It is said that they are made for comfort not for speed
But if this is your first time to visit
keep in mind that common sense will serve you well
The clientele are a tolerant type
but staring is often considered impolite
But if however you feel attracted to one of the patrons
a simple smile should do
And although this is merely a rumour
I have heard that many relationships have started here
And if you are a person who might be described as shy
keep your wits about you
Do not be awed by the magic
Of course the wizards, warlocks, fairies and elves
are the talented type
But just remember that Bilbo Baggins is a Hobbit
and for this he can be quite proud
So if you seek adventure and just a bit of haberdashery
I believe that this would be a wonderful place for you to start
But just remember that few people
will understand the opportunity that has now fallen
upon your tightly bound feet
Do with it as you wish
But remember that if you choose
to experience the mystic mountain
serious dangers may arise
And as your mind will wander
perception and sensation are likely to become askew
But I thrive on the idea
even though there are some sacred things that I must admit
that I might have lost
Yet I know that I could never return
But I have no angst when it comes to a former life
that was quite boring, loathsome and incredibly mundane
