How to Draw a Mean Face
- 1). Obtain reference pictures in your preferred style. For example, if you want to draw a cartoon or manga face, you should look for angry or mean expressions in anime or manga pictures. If you want to draw an angry face in the simple smiley style, look for emoticon pictures. A realism style should use real-life individuals as a base or reference.
- 2). Draw an oval shape for the head. If you are drawing a smiley style, make it a circle. For a cartoon or manga style, start with an oval and adjust the jawline and pointedness of the chin. Realism will vary in how rounded, square or pointed a chin should look depending on your preferences.
- 3). Make proportion markers. Make a mark for the top and bottom of the eyes so the top of the eyes is about one-third down the face for realism, or about the level of the top of the ear. The nose stops about one-third from the bottom of the chin and the mouth fills in under the nose. These help keep the face from ending up lopsided or disproportionate. Exaggerate your markers for larger eyes and a smaller nose if you are drawing a smiley style or cartoon character.
- 4). Draw in the eyebrows and eyes. Turn the eyebrows in a downward slant so the bottom part is near the top of the nose and the other side rises upward. Drawing the eyebrows together often is associated with anger or a lack of kindness. Give the eyes an angry appearance by tipping the inner corner nearest the nose slightly downward to match the eyebrows.
- 5). Draw the nose. The style you prefer will determine the appropriate nose. Choose a simple line or leave the nose off entirely for cartoon or anime styles. Refrain from drawing a nose on a smiley face. Draw the nose to proportion on a realistic face. Add some lines for wrinkles around the top of the nose and flare out the nostrils.
- 6). Draw in the mouth. Draw a simple line for the mouth that is slightly down and tilted at the corners to form a frown. You can draw lips in the same fashion. For true anger, draw a mouth that parts between the lips and shows gritted teeth or pen the mouth in an open, yelling position. Always turn the mouth downward to avoid making the drawing look cheerful.
- 7). Add lines for wrinkles. Lines are added around the mouth to form pulls in the skin and wrinkles. This shows that the expression is both purposeful and unkind.
- 8). Draw in hair, if preferred.
- 9). Erase any proportion lines.
