  Toughkenamon is found in Chester County, a bucolic area south of Philadelphia near the Delaware and Maryland border. While Toughkenamon is not a large section of Chester County (just more than two miles in area), it borders or is minutes from several populated towns such as West Grove, West Chester, Avondale and Kennett Square. With sprawl and several farms being converted to other uses, this area is home to several well-maintained public golf courses.
  
  

Loch Nairn Golf Club

• Located right off of Route 1, Loch Nairn Golf Club is a par-70 course that measures just over 6,300 yards in length. Loch Nairn boasts several bunkers, doglegs and undulating greens, which make the course challenging and fun, but not anything that would prove too difficult for the average golfer. While Loch Nairn offers several birdie opportunities, such as the 325-yard par-4 second hole, it also has a 220-yard par-3, which could give amateur golfers a bit of trouble. Loch Nairn often is meticulously maintained, and its rates are affordable at $45 to golf 18 holes with a cart on weekdays and $55 to golf 18 holes with a cart on weekends, as of July 2010.

Chisel Creek Golf Club

• Chisel Creek Golf Club is a young course, having opened in 2000. The par-70 course sits on the site of a former farm, and includes many challenges, including several fairway bunkers, water hazards, tight fairways, wooded out-of-bounds areas, and a par-3 island green. Chisel Creek has a practice range and a chipping and putting area, so golfers can loosen up before teeing off. Greens fees are competitive: $39 to play 18 holes with cart on the weekdays, and $49 to play 18 with a cart on the weekends, as of 2010. Chisel Creek may be a bit too challenging to a high handicapper, but could be just what a low or mid-handicapper is looking for.

Broad Run Golfer's Club

• Located minutes from Toughkenamon in West Chester, PA, Broad Run Golfer's Club is a nearly 7,000-yard par-72 course that plays to the big hitters. While there are not many water hazards, long shots must be made with precision, as high, thick roughs can make it a long day for golfers who do not find the fairway. The course has many areas of elevation, and golfers must plan their shots and go for placement many times depending on whether they are shooting uphill or downhill. Weekend rates at Broad Run range from $34 to $74, depending on the time you want to get out; weekday rates range from $34 to $54; and Friday rates are between $34 and $59, as of 2010.
