Michelle Obama, First Lady and Style Icon

Many critics have likened Michelle Obama to Jacky Onassis, a compliment indeed, and one I strongly agree with. Both women are stunningly attractive and have a natural flair for dressing. Michelle's "deep" colouring means she looks stunning in black but she can also wear some vivid bright colours too.

As a result of her husband's job, Mrs Obama has become one of the most closely observed women in the western world. Before the presidential election she was little known worldwide, but has now been fast tracked into the limelight.

Just as other wives of the President before her, she is now under constant scrutiny from the press and will never again be able to set foot outside her front door dressed in anything other than "immaculate". If you ever worry about popping to the shops in your dressing gown, think of Michelle!

Her style looks effortless and chic and attention to detail in her accessories is insurmountable. She somehow manages to look classically elegant yet showing a streak of individuality in the way she dresses. Most of the clothes she wears are simple and understated. She mostly sticks to plain colours, rather than pattern which means her clothes are less memorable and she can wear them again in different combinations. She has a lovely curvy figure which is shown to its best in shapely dresses, teamed with long coats or jackets.. I would describe her look as a mix between "City Chic" and "Classic". Her use of strong colours is not in keeping with "City Chic" but the elegance is. The cuts she chooses are "Classic" for example she often wears a shift dress.

You may be forgiven for thinking it is easy for her. She probably has a team of Image Consultants to guide her and a budget we normal folk can only dream about, but we can all take a leaf out of Mrs O's book. It is easier and more cost effective to buy classic styles that are up-to-date but not "high fashion". In other words, it is better to spend your money on a few staples such as a jacket, trousers, skirt and shift dress that fit you perfectly and are in colours that really suit you. You can then combine these "basics" with tops, shoes, bags and accessories that are right on trend.

I am sure we will continue to see Michelle Obama as a style icon, inspiring women all over the world.
