Western Bluebird – Male

106 20
Common Name: Western Bluebird
Scientific Name: Sialia mexicana
Range: Western United States, year-round in most of Arizona and New Mexico, southern and coastal California and parts of Mexico. Breeding range extends north to southern British Columbia, and winter range extends further throughout the southwest and into central Mexico.

Similar to its eastern cousin, the western bluebird is distinguished by its royal blue or purplish throat, rusty coloration on the back and gray wash on the abdomen rather than plain white.

These bluebirds are slightly less cosmopolitan and can be more difficult to find than eastern bluebirds, but do gather in noticeable flocks near water sources and good feeding areas.
