Medicaid & Food Stamp Program
- Medicaid provides coverage for normal health care as well as long-term nursing home care, long-term personal home care and in some instances may cover part of the cost for assisted living.
- Specific requirements are necessary to be eligible for Medicaid. Your income and assets, age and physical condition (such as disabled or pregnant) are taken into consideration. You must be a U.S. citizen or legal immigrant.
- The rules of eligibility vary among states and special rules apply for disabled children and individuals living in nursing homes. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services provides links to State Medicaid programs.
- In addition to individuals with low income, Medicaid recipients also include disabled people and those over 65 years of age.
- Food stamps are provided to households that qualify and meet the income and resources limits. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal immigrants.
- Individuals applying for or receiving supplemental security income can also apply for food stamps at their local Social Security Administration office. Others may apply through their local Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) office.
