How Does a Cleansing Diet Work?
- A cleansing diet works by letting the body rest and restore itself to health. When not constantly bogged down digesting large portions of fatty and over-processed food, the body can "catch up" on its natural rejuvenation process. Feeling bloated, sluggish and overly tired is a good indication that it is time to cleanse. There are many types of cleanses out there and trying to sort through them all can be confusing. The general consensus of most cleansing diets is elimination of processed and pre-packaged foods and the inclusion of more fruits and vegetables. The benefits are many and varied, but generally support colon and liver health. Some, because of fear and difficulty giving up junkie comfort foods, feel that a vegetable-based diet is monotonous and restrictive, however, this is not true. There are a wide variety of vegetables, fruits and grains to pick from. This can be a good time to sample new and different foods and to experience new taste sensations.
- The only thing that is really needed is desire--desire to make a change and to do something to improve your health. Head off to the grocery and stick to the produce aisle. Look for veggies, especially green, leafy ones and fresh fruits. When available, organic produce is best. Make sure to wash all produce in soap and water. To properly cleanse the system, you must not eat gluten, corn, wheat, soy, dairy, alcohol, caffeine, refined sugars, processed foods and butter and oils. This however, doesn't mean starvation. When hungry, eat. Eat all the fresh non-starchy veggies and fruits, especially watery ones, you desire. Legumes, nuts and seeds and some well-tolerated grains like brown rice and quinoa can also be included. Most importantly, drink plenty of pure water. Drink before eating as thirst cues are often mistaken for hunger.
- If allowed, the human body has a natural and highly efficient ability to cleanse itself, to rid itself of unwanted chemical and environmental toxins and parasites. Environmental pollutants, stress and a diet filled with over-processed fatty foods compromise this ability. When helped by a supportive cleansing diet, a sluggish body is recharged. The body is restored to an alkaline state. This results in good health, better nutrient absorption, more energy, weight-loss, clearer skin and a reduction in food cravings, especially addictive ones. A person will feel healthier and be in a more positive state of mind. An ability to distinguish true hunger may also be obtained. As an added benefit, the cleansing diet can transition into a lifestyle choice. Lean proteins, like chicken and fish can be added to round out a healthy diet. In place of butter and heavy fats, olive oil can be a tasty alternative. Use balance when it comes to the occasional treats, sweets and alcoholic indulgences. Remember lots of water and plenty of exercise is beneficial.
