Regg Miller's Where Is All The Testosterone Going? (Women beware, it's a man's POV) is a timely and intriguing take on our "role reversed" society. Written in a relaxed style that feels conversational, it illustrates how and why men act the way they do. It also depicts how the pressure of becoming female compliant is painting our boys into a "little quiet corner" with fewer and fewer places to take out their aggression. A clever read for Boomers who've lived through the 60s, 70s and 80s who will no doubt reminisce with the author as he presents many familiar situations.
While this book centers primarily on men and male issues, including testosterone, it raises many controversial topics about co-existing and offers women straight forward thinking that could potentially lead to a better understanding of their counterparts. It's also the ideal book for single moms raising teenage boys or for women who just want to learn what makes their husbands or boyfriends "tick."
The author provides a forward thinking blueprint for updating traditional values where the male has been the provider, the female the nurturer. Given the massive strides women have achieved in their social, sexual, and political arenas, Miller projects that we may be headed toward a society where sexual differences are becoming blurred in the work place and in relationships. The book asks the question whether, women who are more powerful than ever, will need men at all?
.
For decades, women have pleaded with men to understand their physical and mental makeup. The result has been many books exploring the female psyche. Few books, however, have been devoted to men's specific concerns. Where Is All The Testosterone Going? takes dead aim on how the "King of Hormones" defines a man's life through his chronological and maturation phases. More importantly, the book is a vehicle for assuring men that those early sexual and aggressive urges are normal and vital.
One of many resonating points from the book is that although sex and violence are innate and as key to male development as Apple Pie, the reality is that these primal urges must be understood and controlled. This book will go a long way in helping men to open up to their hormonal makeup and in providing women with a better understanding of the strain and stress that men face in a less violent, yet still competitive, world.
Miller's book is honest and paints a resonating picture of today's frustrations of being a North American Male. There are countless passages from this book that are funny, informative, yet thought provoking. For example, "If you want to blame someone for creating men the way they are, blame God. He built the prototype and injected us with DNA and Mr. T." or "What are you thinking right now? is such a women's question. It is the most ambiguous, yet profound question in the whole wide world. And to my knowledge, no straight man has ever asked it first." Women may recognize every single man they've ever known in this book and will smile at how they've managed to put up with them through romance and relationships. In fact, the book may have you chuckling and raising your eyebrows at the same time in spite of your gender.
In a nutshell, Miller encourages men to manage those rape-and-pillage urges while "working toward a more humane love and understanding," but still "let the testosterone roll." From puberty to mid life crisis, most will find Miller's window into the world where men live to be accurate and refreshing. Where is All The Testosterone Going? is an intuitive read that will help men understand their changing roles and help women better appreciate the men they love.
