How to File Multiple City Taxes
- 1). Obtain the city tax forms for each city that you need to file taxes. Typically you can download these from the city website. For example, the city of Pickerington, Ohio's website at ci.pickerington.oh.us has a link on the main page for "Income Tax" under "Government." The "Income Tax" page has all of the forms, including instructions, for city income taxes that you can download to your computer.
- 2). Gather your W-2 that you got from each employer you had during the tax year. Look at the bottom of each W-2 to see which city or cities income tax was withheld on. This is found in Boxes 18 through 20 on your W-2 form. You may have multiple cities on your W-2 or you may have W-2s with different cities listed if you have moved.
- 3). Fill out the city income tax form for each city using your W-2 forms. You will be entering in your total wages listed on your W-2 for each W-2 you have as well as the city income taxes paid as listed on the W-2. If you have moved be sure to only use the W-2 that applies for each city. For example, if you lived and worked half the year in Cincinnati and half the year in New York City you do not include the New York City W-2 with the Cincinnati W-2 as your city income tax only applies to income you earned while you lived or worked in that city. If you have a situation where you paid city taxes to two cities simultaneously, you will enter that on the city income tax form under "Localities." This is important as you end up getting a credit toward your city taxes since you paid city taxes to another city. For example, in Ohio the amount is 1.5 percent.
- 4). Submit your city income tax forms to the address listed on each form. You will also have to include copies of your W-2s with each form. Only enclose the relevant copies to prevent confusion.
