Amsterdam Dungeon

Some love it, others hate it; some call it interactive, theatrical entertainment, others a sad tourist trap. But visitors inevitably wonder what the Amsterdam Dungeon is and whether it's worth it. Like Madame Tussauds, the Dungeon is a multi-city theme museum whose sensationalistic exhibit isn't exactly "haute culture", but can be fun nonetheless, especially for families.

Despite its international locations, the museum's exhibit is certainly tailored to the native history of Amsterdam: true stories are embellished for a result that can best be described as historical horror fiction, and reenacted live by a cast of talented actors.

Note that the museum is not recommended for children under 10.

What's to See at the Amsterdam Dungeon

Visitors are taken on a 90-minute tour of several spooky scenarios, most of which address true historical events in Amsterdam. In 2010, a scene from the Dutch East India Company was introduced, which transports viewers back to the squalorous conditions aboard a 17th-century merchant ship, the Batavia. In the same period, "Rembrandt's Secret" revisits the story of Geertje Dircx, Rembrandt's model and lover, whom the painter had confined to a madhouse after their relationship soured. The live-action shows enthrall kids and amuse adults ... for the most part, at least.

Families and others can benefit from combination tickets that include Madame Tussauds and/or an Amsterdam canal cruise, for a trio of family-friendly activities. Order tickets in advance on line for the best deals; special discounts apply for entry times after 3pm.
