How to Remove Floating Pond Algae in South Carolina
- 1). Pick out all algae you can reach with your hands. Skim the water with the net to remove as much surface algae as possible.
- 2). Put 1 barley bundle in the pond for every 1,000 gallons of water in the pond. The bundles give off enzymes that restrict the growth of algae, and also eat up nutrients that algae need to live.
- 3). Put floating plants, such as lilies, in the pond to reduce how much sunlight can enter it. The less sunlight, the less floating algae will be able to grow.
- 4). Pour an algaecide into the pond to eradicate the algae. Do this before you put any fish into the pond. Make sure you consult a representative at your local aquatic store to ensure the algaecide you purchase will not harm fish or other organisms in the future. Newer algaecide products have been engineered to target only the algae that builds up on the surface of your pond.
