Student Views on Facebook Screening by Admissions Committees
Of the 7560 email invitations that were sent, 193 recipients were ineligible because they were in joint programmes or had requested to be unsubscribed from AAMC surveys. Another 223 invitations were undeliverable or bounced back. A total of 2109 individuals answered at least one question in the survey; using as a denominator the 7144 who received the invitation and were eligible to participate, we calculated a response rate of 30% (2109/7144). Respondents did not differ from medical students nationally with regard to type of medical school and regional representation. However, participants were younger, more likely to be female, white, and in their first year of medical school.
In response to the question 'How do you think the review board should regard these pictures?' the majority of respondents (63.5%) indicated 'the pictures should be considered along with other factors, but should not be grounds for automatic rejection of the application'. A third (33.7%) believed 'the pictures should have no bearing on my application; the pictures are irrelevant'. Another 2.8% endorsed the belief that 'the pictures should be grounds for automatic rejection of the application'.
