How to Evaluate the Credentials of a Nutritionist

    • 1). Credentials are important when finding your nutritionist. Determine why you need to see a nutritionist. If you are overweight, your needs will be different from someone who has food allergies or is diabetic. Try to find a nutritionist who specializes in certain areas and can help with your specific situation.

    • 2). Nutritionists are not necessarily required to have any distinctions. Nutritionists can be credentialed by the American Clinical Board of Nutrition. You can visit acbn.org to find a nutritionist under consideration.

    • 3). Research and determine how long they have had their credentials and been in business. You can find this information by calling the nutritionist directly. If your potential nutritionist has his own practice you can check with the Better Business Bureau or your local Chamber of Commerce for any complaints or issues. You also can find where your nutritionist went to school and trained.

    • 4). Meet your nutritionist. A nutritionist might have impressive credentials and experience, but he might not be a good match because of personality or communication skills. See if it is possible to set up an initial consultation that will allow you to determine if your nutritionist is sensitive to your needs.
