March Madness 2008 vs. College Hoops 2k8
Every college basketball fan, at one point or another, has fantasized about either playing the game or running a team. Fortunately, for those of us who weren't gifted with a blistering crossover dribble or unerring jump shot, there are video games.
Here's a look at the two big guns in the college basketball simulation category: the College Hoops franchise from publisher 2k Sports and the March Madness line from EA.
Unfortunately, this is the last year that we'll be able to play compare/contrast with these titles. 2k Sports recently announced that they will not publish a 2009 edition of College Hoops due to a breakdown in negotations with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC). There's more than a little suspicion that EA negotiated an exclusive license with CLC, much as they've done in the past in establishing exclusive licenses with the NFL and NFLPA for their John Madden franchise.
Which game is best for you? Let's check out the reviews.
Platform:XBox 360, PS3, PS2
The Good: The new "Play Designer" feature, which allows players to create their own plays for both offense and defense, gets high marks from reviewers, as does the "Sixth Man Advantage" feature, in which the home team gets a boost from the crowd reaction. Reviewers also mention a rich dynasty mode and a wide range of coaching adjustment options.
The Bad: Occasional difficulty hitting layups -- even uncontested, and occasionally-choppy game play are the major complaints.
The Verdict: College Hoops 2k8 rated an average 8 out of 10 on GameDaily, IGN, and GameSpot

The Good: Improved controls for low-post play mean your All American center or power forward doesn't have to be a complete bystander in the offense any more. Dynasty mode is improved, with clearer menus and more options. Dick Vitale.
The Bad: Game play often feels very slow and controls unresponsive. Ball physics need work, particularly when rebounding. Dick Vitale.
The Verdict: March Madness 2008 rated an average 7 out of 10 on GameDaily, IGN, and GameSpot
