How to Adjust Your Property Taxes

    • 1). Request an appointment with your local tax collector or county tax assessor's office. Let them know that you would like to submit a tax grievance or challenge the current property tax on your property.

    • 2). Obtain an independent appraisal. Ask your real estate agent, friends or family for referrals. On average, in 2010, an appraisal costs $300.

    • 3). Pull records of recent home sales that are comparable to yours within the last 12 months. You can get this information through a real estate website like Zillow or Propertyshark. You can also go to your local courthouse or ask your real estate agent. Make sure the homes sales are for homes in the same age, square footage, location and condition as yours.

    • 4). Make your case. Go to your interview and prove that the property values in your neighborhood have changed, which means yours should too. If all your information is correct, the tax assessor should approve the request.
