• One of the most popular ways to use a salary sacrifice is to invest it. Contributions to accounts like a retirement fund are considered "fringe benefits," and are taken out before taxes. This means more money towards a retirement fund, but less immediate money. • Universities and clubs that require benefits often offer vouchers and a discount on having a membership. Vouchers can generally be used in places owned by the employer. For example, the University of Melbourne offers book shop vouchers, reduced cost of museum membership and a reduction in course fees as compensation for salary packaging.

• A number of items are commonly used to compensate for a salary sacrifice. Items such as PDAs, laptops, or even vehicles may be used.
