    • 1). Spread a plastic sheet across the roof of your car upon which the Christmas tree will lie. The plastic sheet will protect the paint of your car from sap and scratches.

    • 2). Stand the tree up and shake it gently. You will want to shake the tree to release any loose needles, insects and insect eggs.

    • 3). Wrap the tree in a large blanket or tarp so that it is completely covered. Wrapping the tree will further protect your car as well as parts of the tree that are vulnerable to wind.

    • 4). Put on a pair of gloves to protect your hands from the tree’s needles. The gloves will assist you in getting a better grasp on the tree when you are lifting it onto the car.

    • 5). Lift the tree with the help of a partner and place it in the center of the roof of your car. Make sure that the stump is toward the front of your car and the top of the tree is at the back. Placing the top of the tree toward the back of the car will protect the top from wind, which could cause it to break.

    • 6). Tie the tree securely to the roof of the car with a rope or several bungee cords. Wrap the rope around the tree, through the car windows and back around the tree so that it is firmly tied to the car. Pull and push the tree to make sure that it does not move and is tied down tightly.

    • 7). Place a red flag or piece of red cloth on the end of the tree if it extends beyond the length of your car. A red flag will signal to other drivers to be cautious of the length of the tree.
