Drawing Cars - Collector Cars
"Collector cars" is a relatively small segment of the car world, and it means many things to many people.
For this discussion, I mean any car that a serious collector might show at a judged car show, like a concours.
The list might include a Packard, a Lincoln, or a Duesenberg.
Yes, these are high dollar cars.
I find these cars fun to draw, they often have spectacular styling that sets them completely apart from other cars.
Even if a person didn't know the difference between a Duesenberg and a Desoto, he would be drawn to the "Dusey," it simply has a presence! Duesenbergs were the most expensive cars made during the years that they were being manufactured.
The company had to justify the high prices, and they did that with style and quality, and size.
Those same qualities make them, and others like them, ideal candidates as models for drawings.
The old collector cars were often made to be driven by chauffeurs.
They also had to be roomy to allow the passenger(s) enough room to not feel crowded.
Many of them had unique seating arrangements, like jump seats that allowed one to carry extra people on short jaunts, like to the opera.
All of this room inside the car translated into extreme length.
With the length, came great weight.
Now, the car needed a huge engine to haul around all of its mass.
Because the V-engine configuration wasn't being used in most early cars, the engine became very long.
Suddenly, the hood grew to very impressive proportions.
All of these characteristics make these cars spectacular to draw.
A side view of a car like this is singularly dramatic! Even drawn exactly to scale, this era of car can look like a locomotive.
In order to maintain the car's proportions, the wheels and tires also got very large in diameter.
If you pose a person next to a car like this, it will dwarf the human! Those not familiar with these cars will look at your drawing, and not be able to look away, I will bet.
