How Can I Renew My Green Card?
- 1). Obtain a copy of USCIS Form I-90. Prepare the form, which will ask you to provide your personal information and answer questions regarding your immigration status, immigration history and travel history to and from the United States. State your reason for applying to obtain a new green card -- select the option explaining that you wish to renew a green card that will expire within six months or that has already expired.
- 2). Gather supporting documents required by USCIS for renewal of a green card, including any certificates or court orders changing your legal name since you obtained your current green card and a copy of your current green card that has expired or that will expire within six months. As of March 2011, include a check or money order from a U.S. bank for $450, made out to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to pay for the total of your I-90 application fee and biometrics fee.
- 3). Mail your completed I-90 form, supporting documents and fee payment to USCIS at one of the two addresses specified in the agency's instructions for the I-90 form. Note that the correct address depends on whether you plan to mail your application materials using the U.S. Postal Service or another delivery service.
- 4). Appear at the designated local USCIS office at the scheduled appointment date and time to have your fingerprints taken after receiving your biometrics notice from USCIS. Bring a form of government-issued identification, such as your foreign passport, state driver's license, other identification card issued by your state or identification issued by the U.S. military.
- 1). Access the e-filing option on the USCIS website. If you have not previously used the USCIS website to submit a form, create a new-user log-in and set up your account.
- 2). Complete the I-90 form online by filling out the required fields and submit the form electronically.
- 3). Gather your supporting documents, such as a copy of your current green card, as you would need to do for an application by mail, and mail these documents to USCIS at the designated address. USCIS will not process your submitted I-90 form until the agency receives your supporting documents. Include a U.S. check or money order in the amount of $450 for payment of the application and biometrics fees.
- 4). Comply with the requirement to have your biometrics, or fingerprints, taken as part of your green card renewal application when you receive the appointment notice from USCIS. Appear at your biometrics appointment with at least one acceptable form of identification, such as your foreign passport, state driver's license, other identification card issued by your state or identification issued by the U.S. military.
