Did you know there are over 25,000 orchid species and in excess of 100,000 hybrids orchids? Well, it's true.
But, there are two different types of orchid.
One type is a terrestrial and the other type is an epiphytic.
So what's the difference between these two different types?  Well, terrestrial orchids grow on the ground.
These plants have roots below the surface of the soil.
However some terrestrial plants have roots both in the soil and in the air.
These orchids are known as semi-terrestrial.
One of the most well-known terrestrial orchids is Cymbidium.
There are over forty different types in this orchid family and there are thousands of hybrids.
Cymbidium are found in the wild in Japan, Australia and south-east Asia.
These orchids are very popular as they are very easy to grow.
So they make an ideal beginner plant.
What's more they will reward you with stunning flowers every year.
Epiphytes orchids have a root system that is above the ground.
And these grow on trees, poles or rocks.
These orchids find a host to live on.
But do not cause any damage.
A popular epiphytes orchid is a Dendrobium.
This type of orchid will need more care than a Cymbidium orchid.
And they do not flower on such a regular basis.
These plants can be found in the wild in Polynesia, Australia, Northern India and south-east Asia.
And there are over 1,000 types of Dendrobium orchid.
The type of growing conditions Dendrobiums need are humid, warm growing conditions.
Plus these orchids need to be kept moist.
Phalaenopsis orchids are a very common epiphyte type of orchid.
That's because they are easy to grow and they have long lasting flowers - yellows and pinks.
These orchids are popular at weddings.
Once you know about the two different types of orchid then you can decide which orchid type is most suitable for your growing conditions.
One of my types of orchid is the lady slipper - they have an odd look about them, as the flowers have pouched-shaped lips.
The slipper orchids include four types: Paphiopedilum, Phragmipedium, Cypripedium and Selenipedium.
The Cypripedium and Selenipedium are hard to grow for the beginner, because they can be fairly difficult to grow if you don't have the right temperature that they have naturally in the wild.
There are however many different types of beautiful orchids that every person can grow whether you are a beginner or have grown orchids for many years already.
