Tyson Beckford Speaks His Mind
Tyson Beckford has a whole lot to say about his job as host/judge on Bravo's Make Me A Supermodel -- and let's just say he isn't afraid to speak his mind. During a recent interview, I chatted with the top male model about what it's really like judging a reality TV competition. Here's what he had to say about "pencil-pushing execs," pigeon-toed models, favorite contestants, and more. Also, is this the end of the reality TV road for Tyson?

INTERVIEW WITH TYSON BECKFORD
Thank you so much for talking to me today...This show is something different for you. Have you been having fun doing it?
Yeah. It's pretty cool, [but] I mean, you gotta fight with the network because they also gotta make good TV. Me, I'm not really so concerned with good TV. I'm more concerned about putting the right model out there, 'cause that person gotta carry my name. It's more of that than anything else…I would never do a TV show like this. I don't really watch those shows, like American Idol or America's Next Top Model... I don't really watch 'em. So it's like the first and I think it's the last thing that I'll be doing.OK. Tell me more about [your fights with the network] and how it's different what they want and what you want.
It's always different. I'm like a rebel and for me, it's like working for corporate America, which I'm not used to doing. Being a model, you set your own hours and you pick and choose the jobs you want, so it's like I'm forced into this. You gotta kind of do it their way. It's their money, their show. It takes a bit of getting used to. That's all.
Somebody will walk away from this competition and they'll enter the world of professional modeling. What advice would you give that person?
Make as much money as you can and get the hell out! [Laughter]Do you secretly have one favorite that you hope will win the whole thing?
Yes, I do. I'm not even going to disclose that, but all I'm going to say at the end of the show is 'I told you so.' That's all I'm going to say. I have my favorite and I think all my other panelists probably do. And I think the network probably has the one that they think they want to win. So it's gonna be a bunch of different opinions, so we'll see…but I guarantee that whoever I pick will last long in this business for a long time.So you know who has what it takes…
I already know who has what it takes. There's only one person who could even stand in my circle and still be able to compete with me. So that's how I'm looking at it. I'm trying to find somebody who can keep up with me in everything that I do. Not all of them could. For those who haven't seen this show yet, what would you say is the top reason to watch?
The realness of me. That's the top reason to watch. You get to see me and how real I am. You get to know a little bit about me just by how real I keep it with the kids. Because one thing I always tell the kids is I'm never going to lie to you. If I tell you something, just look at it as I'm helping you. Don't look at it as I'm trying to be mean or anything, because I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just being real, you know. Just like the other day, I told Casey, you know, he's pigeon-toed. And he was like 'Really?' And I'm like 'Dawg, how old are you now? You never noticed that you're pigeon-toed on one foot?' You know, he's great, good looking kid, but I could never put him out there into the world as a supermodel with one foot points straight and the other one points inward. Nah. That's just weird. Imagine if you saw Cindy Crawford with a pigeon toe, or Naomi Campbell or Tyra or any of these models walking down the runway. It's gonna be weird. No designer is gonna want to hire that. It's just like you wouldn't put a pilot with one blind eye to fly United Airlines…You don't want that!
