There are many reasons why someone might need help with Council Tax payments (Council Tax Benefit), these could be loss of employment, a recent relationship breakdown, reduced work hours or illness.
Any of these reasons and many more could mean your ability to pay your Council Tax on a monthly basis, until you are back on your feet or in full time employment.
Help with Council Tax payments if you are suddenly unable to pay it, is as simple as calling into your local benefits office and picking up an application and filling in all the sections relevant to you and your current circumstances.
Once you have filled in the application you must then send it back to the correct benefits office in your area or hand it in personally.
Your application will be screened for eligibility, and if you are successful you will either be entitled to the full amount of Council Tax benefit or a percentage deducted off your monthly bill.
Help with payments depends on how you fit a certain criteria such as:
  • Current savings of less than £16,000, anything more will make you ineligible for Council Tax Benefit.
  • Your employment status and income if any.
  • Immigration status - If you are not a legal UK citizen you will not receive help with payments.
  • Your household income will depend on the amount of help you will receive.
  • If you are in full time education and live with an adult who pays Council Tax.
  • The amount of adults in your household, this concerns the Second Adult Rebate.
If you do receive any other benefits such as disability or job seekers allowance, the amount of these benefits will not be affected if your receive help with your payments.
You can pick up a full list of things to check on your eligibility from any local benefits office/agency, or you can download information and a claim form online.
So if you are in any doubt do not hesitate to make any inquiries so that your claim is not delayed.
In some circumstances you may be eligible for a back dated payment, again you will need to make inquiries with regard to this.
