A Tooth Decay Science Project for Preschoolers
- It has been said that “An apple a day keeps the doctor away,” and in this case it could get preschoolers to take better care of their teeth. Each preschooler should have an apple or a pear for this experiment. Using a fork, each child will poke some holes into the fruit and see how it looks. Then, over the course of a few days, students will compare and study how the fruit looks. A teacher should explain to her students that decay creates holes and has a similar effect to that being evidenced on the fruit.
- Show kids how they can fight plaque while comparing teeth using disclosing tablets. Have each child use a disclosing tablet in her mouth, which will show where plaque has built up on the teeth. Students will have fun checking out the colors on their teeth. Photos can be taken to document, compare and contrast the amount of plaque on each preschooler's teeth.
- Over the course of time teeth can get discolored from the foods and drinks that are consumed on a daily basis. Kids can see the staining process caused by tea bags on an egg and learn how to properly clean a tooth. Boil the egg with the tea bags to stain them and then have the kids use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean it off.
- As teeth decay, the enamel starts to get thin, which can cause cavities and pain. A hard-boiled egg and some vinegar can show how enamel thins as decay eats away at it. Let kids compare the egg before and after soaking it in vinegar overnight.
