How to Donate Your Car in Northeastern Illinois
- 1). Use the IRS website (see Resources) to search for charities in your area of northeastern Illinois. Not all of the charities that you find will accept car donations. Some that do include Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army and Goodwill. Churches and other religious organizations which may accept car donations are not listed in the IRS database.
- 2). Contact the charity to which you wish to make your donation and ask if it is currently accepting car donations. If so, ask if it offers a pick-up service or if you have to drop off the vehicle.
- 3). Take your car to the charity's donation center or arrange for it to be picked up from your home, if there is a pick-up service.
- 4). Give your keys and the signed car title to the donation center employee. Take the license plate off the car, if you haven't already done so.
- 5). Obtain your temporary donation receipt from the clerk before you leave. The charity has 30 days to auction off the vehicle and send you an updated receipt to reflect the selling price, which is the amount you can deduct from your taxes.
