  Adobe Photoshop is one of the most widely used computer image editing programs. It is sold as part of Adobe's Creative Suite, which includes other programs for designing documents, photographs and moving images. Photoshop's effects range from very simple operations to complex professional tasks.
  
  

Adjustments

• Some of the most commonly used Adobe Photoshop effects are basic tools for manipulating or correcting an image. Photoshop refers to these tools as adjustments. They include tools for altering an image's brightness, contrast, color balance, color curves, color saturation and shadow intensity. Photoshop's adjustments also allow users to change a color image to black & white. Most advanced image editing begins with first fine-tuning the adjustments.
  
  

Advanced Effects

• Beyond the adjustments, which may be enough to edit most snapshots, Photoshop contains a host of effects for more advanced image manipulation. There are several tools to crop and resize images, along with a rotate tool that turns the image in any direction. Photoshop's magic wand tool can be used in editing effects by selecting all of a certain colored area. There is also a lasso tool for users to manually select a specific area of the image for further adjustments. These tools are useful for creating superimposition effects.
  
  Other advanced Photoshop effects include tools for changing the opacity of an image, allowing a background image to partially show through, and layering tools for creating a project that is easy to alter in the future by removing and adding specific elements without disturbing other layers of image and text.
  
  

Filter Effects

• Adobe Photoshop includes a long list of filter effects, with more filters available as custom add-ons to the program. Filters allow users to apply a specific type of manipulation to an entire image or a portion of the image.
  
  Artistic filters can make a photograph appear to have been drawn in a variety of artistic media, from pencil or charcoal to finger paint. Other filters add blur effects, change lighting effects, superimpose brush strokes, sharpen the image or add distortion to make the image appear old or damaged.
  
  

Presentation Effects

• Finally, Photoshop contains tools for adding presentation effects. The text tool allows users to add layers of text in many different fonts and styles. Other tools can add borders, format an image for the web or save the file in more than a dozen different formats for use in other programs.
