Instructions for a Lutron Dimmer
- 1). Turn off the power to corresponding circuit breaker supplying power to the existing light switch. Quickly turn the switch back on to make sure the correct breaker has been turned off. If the light fixture goes on, the wrong breaker has been switched off: Go back to the breaker box and turn off the correct breaker.
- 2). Unscrew and remove the existing light switch's faceplate. Remove the screws holding the switch to the wall box, and pull out the switch from the box. Loosen the three terminal screws on the back and side of the switch. Pull out the two black wires from the terminals, as well as the ground wire. Note that the two white wires are connected together with a wire nut in the back of the box.
- 3). Hold the end of one of the black wires from the box to one of the black wire ends connected to the new Lutron dimmer. Screw on a wire nut, making sure the entire bare end of both wires are inside the nut. Take the ends of the remaining black wires from the box and dimmer, hold them together and screw on a wire nut. Hold the end of the bare ground wire from the box to the end of the dimmer's ground wire, and screw on a wire nut.
- 4). Push the wires and dimmer into the box, securing the dimmer to the box with the two screws. Attach the new faceplate to the dimmer by snapping it into place. Turn the power back on.
