How to Color Shellac With Mixol
- 1). Use paint remover and a scraper to get rid of old paint or shellac on your work surface. Use a medium grit sandpaper to further prepare the surface. Wipe the area down with a damp washcloth when you are done.
- 2). Open your shellac and Mixol containers. Add Mixol slowly until you obtain the proper color consistency. If you are working with clear shellac, add only three to five percent of Mixol to the shellac. Five to eight percent Mixol should be used for any other kind of shellac.
- 3). Blend the mixture very well. A paint mixer works best for this. It is vital to make sure the mixture is thoroughly blended, otherwise the effects will not be long lasting or aesthetically pleasing over time.
- 4). Find a inconspicuous spot on your work surface to do a test. Apply a small amount and rub it on the surface with your finger. If the shellac turns a darker shade, you may not have blended it well enough or the two mixtures are incompatible. Mix the shellac a bit more and try again. A paint thinner can be added if needed to obtain the proper consistency.
