How to Splice Rope to Chain

Unlaid, taped strands and standing part of the line
Start the eye splice by unlaying eight turns of the strands of the line. Tape the ends of the strands with duct tape to keep them from unraveling as they are worked. - 2
Thimble set in place
The final size of the eye will be determined by the size of the rigger's thimble. Set the rigger's thimble into the proposed eye so that the narrow end of the thimble is exactly even with the base of the unlaid strands then pull the standing part of the line tight around the thimble. - 3
Making the Tucks
The strands should spread out like a three-fingered hand when held to the standing part of the line. Tuck the center strand over the nearest lay, then under the next lay. Tuck the left strand over the nearest lay, then under the next lay. Do the same for the right strand. The strands will be trapped between the lays that they go over and under. - 4). Continue to tuck the strands, first center, then left, then right, until you have made 4 to 6 tucks. The thimble should be tight. Trim any excess length from the strands with the knife or shears for a smart, seamanlike appearance.
- 5). Put the shackle through the thimble and through the anchor ring of the anchor. Insert and tighten the clevis pin in the shackle and insert a short piece of stainless steel baling wire through hole in the head of the clevis pin. Twist the baling wire around the arm of the shackle like the wire tie for a loaf of bread.
