How to Use Livewell in Boats
- 1). Check the depth of the live well. It should be deep enough for the fish to float upright without bumping into other fish. You should also fill the well with as much water as it can hold. This minimizes overcrowding and maximizes available oxygen. Fish should be in an upright position rather than sideways.
- 2). Seek a livewell with a dual pump system. One pump fills the livewell while an aeration pump recirculates the water to add oxygen.
- 3). Make sure your live well does not have any sharp objects or corners that could hurt the fish. Also check that the inside of the hatch is padded.
- 4). Add about 1.5 ounces of table salt for each gallon of water in your tank. This helps to replenish the sodium level and gives fish a better chance of survival.
- 5). Wash out your livewell after each fishing trip. Clean the interior, hoses and pumps to prevent bacteria from forming. Use a commercial livewell treatment which will fight bacteria, encourage healthy fish slime and help the fish.
