Ashley Wagner"s Angry Face is the First Meme of Olympics "14
Just days after the opening ceremony, the 2014 Winter Olympics has finally given us our first internet meme. On February 8, 2014, American figure skater Ashley Wagner gave her first-ever Olympic performance in the short program for team figure skating event. Thanks to a shaky performance (and a bad fall) at the U.S. Nationals competition, the twenty-two year-old Wagner had something to prove when she took the ice in Sochi, Russia, and the Team USA member did not disappoint.
Wagner wowed the crowd and the U.S. commentators with her routine, and she left the ice with a huge smile on her face, expecting a great score. Yet when the judges came back with their scores, things took an ugly turn for the young skater. Wagner saw that she had received a mark of 63.10, putting in her in fourth place behind Japan's Mao Asada (who fell during her routine), and Wagner's crestfallen WTF facial expression was captured by cameras and broadcast around the world. Wagner can also be seen clearly mouthing the words, "That's bullshit."
The Next McKayla Maroney
Immediately after Wagner's priceless reaction shot aired on U.S. television, Twitter lit up as viewers dubbed the images and animated gifs "the next McKayla Maroney" moment. Fans of the 2012 Summer Olympics might remember McKayla Maroney as being the American gymnast whose "What-everrrr" face went viral as she stood on the podium receiving her silver medal. That image was soon dubbed "McKayla Maroney Is Not Impressed," and the meme circulated around the web for well over a year after the Olympics wrapped up.
The McKayla Is Not Impressed meme went on to become one of the Best Memes of 2012, and during a visit to the White House a few months after the Olympics ended, Maroney even got the President of the United States, Barack Obama, in on the scowling action for this hilarious photo.
The First Meme of the Winter Olympics
As soon as Reddit, Tumblr, and social media got their hands on this newest disgruntled Olympian photo, the memes started pouring in! Users from all over cracked open their copies of Photoshop and started placing Ashley Wagner's "angry face" in a wide variety of funny places and events in history. Tumblr blogs were hastily created, and the animated gif became a go-to "reaction gif" for internet comment sections and message boards.
