The US ranks among China and India in the most number of registered vehicles plying their highways everyday.
With this kind of congestion, vehicular accidents are bound to happen to both human and properties, hence, car insurance is a requirement for any vehicle that uses the public roads.
In the US where thousands of cars take the highway at any given time, types of car insurance vary depending what is required by each state and sometimes what is required by each driver.
A car or auto insurance anywhere is a back up plan design to absorb any financial liability a driver might face in a case where the vehicle he is driving meets an accident.
Such coverage extends beyond his own wreck to the loss of lives and property of the other party and sometimes to other incidents that are directly connected to that particular accident.
Except for Virginia, all states require drivers to carry a minimum level insurance.
In this states, this type of insurance is called compulsory.
Insurance companies issue a motor vehicle owner an insurance card which he will use as proof of insurance in cases of accidents.
Car insurance coverage within the US varies depending upon the type of policy a vehicle owner gets.
Some states require drivers to carry around liability insurance coverage to ensure he can cover for the cost and damage in both lives and properties in case an accident happens.
Liability insurance only covers the policy holder when he is driving his own vehicle.
In cases of accidents when the driver is not operating his own vehicle, damages directly resulting from that accident are not covered by the driver's liability insurance and therefore shall be his own personal obligation to pay.
However, there is also a type of car insurance that covers drivers who do not actually own their motor vehicles.
This type of insurance is called Non-Owners' policies or Named Operator Policies.
This type is useful to drivers whose driver's license are being suspended by the government and are required to get an insurance policy to get their licenses back.
Although coverage differs from state to state, the government strictly enforces the use of car insurance for all vehicles for the safety of both lives and property.
In countries that do not actually require motor insurance, accidents most often result to lingering legal battles over responsibility to pay for all the damages incurred by the accident.
