Importance of Reading - Love to Learn
It is important to begin developing a love of reading from day one! Sharing an enthusiasm for reading with your child at all ages will encourage your child to develop a life long love for reading which will help them succeed in a myriad of different ways.
Start by actively reading with your child when they are an infant and you will be helping their development in many areas. Reading with your baby for starters will help with their speech development and help grow their vocabulary! Remember a babies vocabulary can include words they show an understanding to as well as words they can speak!
If you can make it apart of your daily routine to sit down and read books with your baby it will also help build a special bond and relationship between you. As you read make sure to point to pictures and talk about them, your child will start making connections between the words that you are saying and the pictures on the page.
If you read book with quality stories and themes you will also be able to use them as learning tools to explore emotions and events and the acceptable way to respond to them. The importance of reading lies in your responsibility to help your child to become successful readers later in life.
For those of you who have a school aged child I have some tips to help you encourage your child to find a love of words and reading!
The Earlier Years
It is important to continue to play with your child activities that incorporate making sounds for example reciting rhymes, poems, singing songs etc. Create plenty of little informal games with your child that centre around words for example thinking of rhyming words, I spy... something that rhymes with... or something that starts with the letter etc. Make a habit of practicing and singing the alphabet with them. Incorporate the alphabet into everyday conversation: "would you like an apple, ok I will cut one up for you... and apple begins with the letter... A, very good!". Take notice of your childs approach to words and take the time to sound out words and practice their pronunciation with them. READ BOOKS with them and when your child is at school age it is a good idea to start taking some attention of reading comprehension which is something they will be approaching in school tests and naplan (state tests) quite often through out their school career. To help them practice reading comprehension simply think of questions about what has happened in the story you have read and create a discussion with your child about them. Reading comprehension levels from asking questions about simple events or facts about the story right up to things that can be read between the lines (grade 5 level).
