Bird Nest Craft for Toddlers
- This edible craft is fun to make, and even more fun to eat. Chow mien noodles or bran stick cereal, peanuts and coconut flakes make up the edible nest ingredients and resemble the many materials birds use to make their homes. Drop the ingredients in melted chocolate until coated. Put a tablespoon of the mixture on wax paper and use a spoon or your fingers to make a dent in the middle. You can play around with the shape of the mixture until it looks like a bird's nest. Let the nests cool and then put jelly beans in it for the eggs.
- A brown paper bag is all you need for this easy bird nest craft that helps toddlers practice scissor skills. Cut three-fourths off the top of a brown paper bag and cut the removed portion into 1/4-inch strips. Fill the remaining part of the bag with fake grass, moss or green construction paper cut into thin strips and crumpled to resemble grass. Wrap the brown paper bag strips around the bird's nest and attach the strips with glue. Toddlers can place egg-shaped objects in the nest along with bird toys.
- This craft uses a white paper plate as the canvas for a scene of a bird in its nest. Toddlers can research different species of birds, choose the one that they want to make and an adult can cut out the pieces. Cut out the bird and tree with leaves from colored felt and glue them to the paper plate. On the bottom, below the bird, glue dried American moss to the plate as the nest. You can also use hay, shredded wheat cereal or raffia for the nest. Cut out felt eggs and glue them on top of the nest.
- This craft allows toddlers to observe real bird nests and recreate them using clay and natural objects. After observing a picture of real bird nests, toddlers can go outside and collect materials like grass, sticks, flowers, feathers, seeds and moss for their nest. Adults can also provide other items like raffia, rice, beans or oats to fill in any gaps. Use air-dry modeling clay or salt dough to form a small bowl as the base for the nest. Firmly press the items collected into the clay nest and let it dry. You can also bake or dry the clay first and then glue on the nest items.
