How to Change Car Insurance Companies
- 1). The optimal time to change car insurance companies is when your old insurance policy is up for renewal. This was the case with me. I knew that I needed to either renew by August 26 or find me another carrier. When you receive the renewal notice from your old carrier use that information to shop online for another insurance company. Note: You don't have to wait until it is time to renew. Check with your old carrier to see what their policy is on early cancellation and see if it is worth the penalty to cancel.
- 2). Shop online. Shopping online is convenient and you can do a side by side comparison. Auto insurance is very competitive and they want your business so don't settle for less when you know you can get more. It turns out that I was able to get more coverage, car rental, towing, and renter's insurance for only $16 more than what I was paying my old carrier who didn't offer any of this.
- 3). Don't cancel your old policy until you are covered with your new auto insurance company. Let your agent know when you are due to cancel so that he/she will time it just right to avoid a lapse in coverage.
