How to Run a Dryer Vent
- 1). Assess where to route your vent. Take measurements to check that the length will conform to local code. Calculate how many bends, if any, the vent will incur. Keep the pipe as straight as possible; do not use too many bends.
- 2). Check that there is no plumbing, HVAC or wiring in the way. If so, move the wires or piping or reroute the path of the dryer vent. Do not just bend the vent around these systems.
- 3). Drill a pilot hole in the wall where the dryer will be located. Enlarge the hole with a saw to the size needed for the vent pipe. Remove any insulation within the wall. Repeat for any other holes needed until the dryer vent route has been cleared to the outside of the home.
- 4). Install the metal dryer vent piping. This may or may not be flexible depending on your local code. Install elbows or angles as needed. Attach piping as stated in the supplied instructions. Install support hangers or straps as you go. Leave enough extra piping to work with at both ends.
- 5). Install the exterior dryer vent hood. This can either metal or plastic and has a flap that opens when the dryer is running and closes when off to prevent moisture, insects and animals from entering the line. Attach the dryer vent hood to the exterior of the home with the supplied fasteners. Caulk to seal any gaps.
- 6). Connect the dryer to the new vent line. Use a short piece of flexible dryer hose. Secure the hose with the included clamps. For gaps or space around the line where it passes through the wall, you may want to caulk around the pipe. Use a product that is approved for the use.
- 7). Slide the dryer into its location. Do not push the dryer against the wall. Leave enough room to avoid bending or kinking the vent pipe. Turn the dryer on to test the line. Go outside and make sure the air is venting properly.
