How to Adjust Mental Concentration

    • 1). Work on your posture. Sitting up straight in a chair will help you concentrate much better than lying down in bed, for example.

    • 2). Ramp up the lighting. Soft, soothing lights are great for relaxing, but not so much when you need mental concentration.

    • 3). Utilize self-talk. With this exercise, you tell yourself "Be here now," or a similar phrase when you are having a tough time concentrating. This simple phrase helps reel your concentration back into the task at hand.

    • 4). Schedule time for yourself, such as 30 minutes, to think about things you need to do, your future plans or things that are bothering or worrying you. When you know during the day that you have this time set aside, it will be easier to listen to your "Be here now" command.

    • 5). Eat foods that help aid concentration and improve mental functions. These foods include high fiber whole grains, fruit, especially blueberries, nuts, dark chocolate and avocados. Staying hydrated and eating breakfast can also improve mental function.

    • 6). Get plenty of sleep. Most people need around seven to eight hours of sleep to stay alert and focused throughout the day.
